His Boots – The story behind the song

I wrote the song “His Boots” shortly after my dad passed away in March 2010. I remember the driveway being full of vehicles with lots of family at the homestead offering support during our grieving. As we gathered at the house I found myself suddenly intrigued by simple items that belonged to my dad and things I had seen him with in the past.

Days after the funeral I recalled the picture in my mind of my fathers work boots sitting side by side in the porch where he would watch TV or have an afternoon nap on the sofa. You see, I always wore my dad’s old pair of boots when he would get a new pair. He worked at the local pulp mill for over three decades and I don’t overly recall him wearing anything but work boots, even in the heat of summer. He was a worker. I didn’t work at the mill but would often help my dad around the yard with the winter’s wood, the garden or any other chore he had around the house.

As I sat alone with my mom at one point, I had asked her if I could have dad’s boots. She said, “Sure Ted, you can have dad’s boots.” I was grateful. I needed a pair and what better pair to have…then Dads.

His Boots had a variety of evidence on them which told of his whereabouts. From wet lap from his work, wood shavings from the wood pile, soil from the garden or a whole host of animal manure, these clung to his boot sides and soul.

I visited the place we called the hole in the spring after dads’ passing. I saw his shirt hanging on a nail which still hangs there today. I stood in the middle of his little farm yard and witnessed all the grass that had grown up where he once spent a lot of his time feeding and nurturing his animals and birds. It was too quiet! I felt a sense of loss as what was important to him also died. His once vibrant hobby ended with empty cages and dry water dishes. Suddenly I had an idea. I studied his hen house and examined to see if it could be moved. I retrieved a measuring tape and took some notes and then went and made a phone call to find with excitement that it would fit on a trailer and be able to pass under the train bridge to its new destination, my home.

With that said I got some laying hens and found myself walking in the steps of my father. I was excited but soon realized I needed to learn a lot more about raising chickens. I made many phone calls to my dads close bird buddies with what seemed like a million questions, questions which were not important to me when dad was here with us.

Then…one morning as I pulled on his boots and filled up the water jugs, I headed toward the hen house, which was once his, and I looked down staring at my feet as I walked. My thought, here I am walking in my dad’s boots. At that very moment I knew I had my next song.

The truth of the matter is, we all are called to walk in our father’s boots, our heavenly Fathers.

I hope you enjoy the song I’ve written, “His Boots” and whether you have your dad’s boots to walk in or not, I hope you walk in a straight path…toward Him.

The answer to the question many have been asking is “Yes”. I’m heading back to the studio to record the second album. The plane tickets are booked and producer BJ McKelvie and I will be in the air and heading back to Nashville on Feb. 10th.

My hope is that this album will capture the same diversity in the music as the first. However, this album should have a slightly different sound but will probably go unnoticed by some listeners. What I’m saying is that we’ve added Pat Buchanan to the band. Pat’s been around since albums were recorded on cassettes. Pat’s played for Faith Hill, Kenny Chesney, Trace Atkins and so many others too numerous to list. With that said, you can look forward to some very dynamic guitar riffs with Pat and JT Conflos. I’ll be sure to take some video. It’s not too often you see these two heavyweight guitarists together on the same project. Even Sarah Emily, the station director at OmniSounds, said she’s gotta see this.

Also, there will be two possibly three songs from this album which we’ve planned to release on main stream country radio stations in Canada. With this in mind, the messages are still positive and will carry the same truths as the first. Singles are also planned for Christian country in the US as well as Christian AC in Canada.

The album should be ready to be released sometime near the end of April 2012

Let me tell ya...his lead guitar is anything but quiet. This guy was born to play guitar. He's played for Alan Jackson, Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney and Brad Paisley just to name a few. You might of heard tell of those guys. LOL" title="025" />

Just wanted to give a little plug for Circle Square Ranch in Sussex, NB. We sent our oldest daughter Micah to camp this month and she absolutely loved it. She used to say she wanted another puppy dog for a pet…..now she wants a horse. LOL! That may mean a building project for me within the next couple of years. Awesome!

I had heard from a friend who has been to most of the circle square ranches across Canada and they commented that Circle Square in Sussex was the one of the nicest if not the best. When we arrived everyone was more than friendly and we enjoyed a wagon ride up to the ranch. It was the first time we ever left one of our girls away from home like that…..my wife was holding back tears.

We hadn’t heard from Micah all week and were very excited to pick her up and see her. She loved every minute of it and was making plans before we even left to come back next year. That’s fantastic! Hats off and a big thank you to all the ranch workers at Circle Square for making it a super experience.

May was a busy month. I’ve been home only one weekend in the last five. Something I may have to get used to. However, I was able to visit parts of New Brunswick that I have never visited before over the past couple of weeks. I was at Campabello Island. It’s amazing that you have to cross the US/Canadian border to get there. I also visited Grand Manan Island for three nights. It’s also a really cool fishing town with alot of history. They took us out on a boat to visit a salmon fish farm on the waters and a lobster farm as well. Very nice experience.

Finished off the circut with a stop in Prince Edward Island. It’s been a while since I’ve visited PEI and I was glad to see how much the island has grown up. It’s a very clean and refreshing tourism spot for sure.

I’ve been sharing a new song I’ve written with the folks. I’ve called it, “She Never Stops”. Kinda like a proverbs 31 woman. Hope to share it with you on the next album Lord willing.

I was pleased to recieve an unexpected letter in the mail just the other day from Prime Minister Stephen Harper. MP Tilly O’Neill-Gordon, Member of Parliament for Miramichi, had given the Prime Minister a copy of my debut album “Invade My Soul”.

He responded, “As a music lover and amateur artist, I enjoy nothing more than being introduced to new talent. However, there is something particularly exciting about hearing a Canadian artist for the first time. I look forward to sharing your CD with my wife, Laureen, and adding Invade My Soul to my personal media library.”

It’s not everyday you get a letter from the Prime Minister of Canada so I thought I would share this with all of you.

I’ve completed two songs since my return from Nashville in February. That’s not as many as I wish but I’m happy with the end results. I’m looking forward to getting them recorded in the next album Lord willing.

However, I have several fragments of other songs. I get pieces of songs everyday, it’s just that I’m not always in the right gear to put it all together. I’m often on the go and doing chores and unable to spend focussed energy on developing the words or to catch the melody. Sometimes I kick myself sort-a-speak for not capturing a certain phrase or tune. That’s alright though. It’ll come when it comes just like it always does. And sometimes I’m not ready to write because I’m still learning the lessons and going through the experiences which will help me on the next song. I’ll never write a song for the sake of writing a song. I want to be personally connected to the words so I can truely get behind it when I sing.

Newest single hit the US airwaves August 2010. It’s a testament to my wife, my children and Jesus. Here are the lyrics and the song.

Update – “I Don’t Want To Miss” charted on CMW as the song with the most spins making it number one the week of Sept. 22/10th. HMG charted the song at 25 nationwide while many stations charted it in their top 10.Singing News Magazine also charted “I Don’t Want To Miss” #1.

I Don’t Want To Miss

Lyrics

I Don’t Want To Miss

I’ve gotta good woman with eyes so blue
Her heart is pure and her love is true
She has Jesus so she knows how to love
It flows from her heart from His throne above
She’s been a sweet blessing in my life
I rush home to tell her every night

Chorus
I don’t want to miss an opportunity to tell you that I love you
I don’t want to miss a moment that I could spend with you
There’s nothing in this world that I’d rather do
I don’t want to miss an opportunity to love you

Sweet little girls with skin so fair
They love to run their fingers through daddy’s hair
Playing little games going coo chee coo
With Dora the explorer and Winnie the Pooh
Crawling on the floor on a Saturday
I hold them in my arms and they hear me say

Church bells ringing it’s Sunday again
I can’t wait for the singing to begin
Cause I’m all fired up I’ve been singing all week
From spending time at Your precious feet
Lord You’re the reason I’m so blessed
I’ve got a little secret that I must confess
